Lewisham Young Mayor Elections

With less than 2 weeks to go before the next Young Mayor of Lewisham is announced on 12th October, our very own candidate Ruona Ike has been stepping up her campaign across the borough.  She has already presented assemblies at Prendergast Ladywell School , Drumbeat School (and of course Addey and Stanhope!), and she plans more presentations as the campaign continues.

Ruona has her hopes set on this prestigious title and she is passionate about making positive change, and in particular highlighting the importance of making the right choices in education, to students across the borough.  Her manifesto reflects this:

“I want to make a change in Lewisham.  A change where I can look back in five years and see how positively I have impacted young people’s lives.  Firstly I want to give all young people exposure to universities, the city and different working environments.  I would also give students more information about career prospects and what A-levels to select for the university course they want.”

Should she be elected, Ruona would succeed Kayla Sh’ay, the current Young Mayor of Lewisham and another Addey’s student.  This would be a significant achievement for the school and Addeyans are full of support for their candidate.  Headteacher Ms Shapiro said:

“The Addeys family are all behind Ruona’s election campaign.  Her manifesto reflects the core values of our school – to support our young people to achieve the very best they possibly can.  I encourage every student to vote in this election and to vote with integrity.”

The Young Mayor is democratically elected every year through Lewisham’s schools and colleges.  Anyone aged 11 to 17 who lives, works or studies in Lewisham is eligible to vote in the election on 11th October.

The Young Mayor serves a one year term and supports, and is a spokesperson for, the borough’s young people.  They work with a team of young advisors and oversee a budget of at least £25,000.
